A password manager is the most important security tool after antivirus. Stores all passwords in an encrypted database so you can use a unique strong password for every site.

KeePass vs Bitwarden

KeePass Bitwarden
Storage Local (.kdbx file) Cloud or self-hosted
Open source
Free ✅ (Premium available)
Cross-device sync Manual (via cloud drive) Automatic
Browser extension Via plugin ✅ Built-in

KeePass — if you want full control and local storage. Bitwarden — if you need convenient sync across devices.

KeePass Setup

# Modern fork with better UI
winget install KeePassXCTeam.KeePassXC
  1. File → New Database → choose location (OneDrive/Dropbox for sync)
  2. Set Master Password — the only password you need to remember
  3. Add entries: Entry → Add Entry (Ctrl+I)
  4. Use Password Generator (dice icon) for each new password

Browser autofill: install KeePassXC-Browser extension for Chrome/Firefox.

Sync: save .kdbx in OneDrive/Google Drive. File is encrypted — safe even if cloud is compromised.

Bitwarden Setup

winget install Bitwarden.Bitwarden
  1. Register at bitwarden.com
  2. Set Master Password (unrecoverable — remember it)
  3. Install browser extension
  4. Sign in everywhere — passwords sync automatically

Add password:

  • Browser extension auto-captures logins → Save
  • Or manually: app → + New Item

Password Generator (PowerShell)

function New-Password {
    param([int]$Length = 20)
    $chars = 'abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ0123456789!@#$%^&*'
    -join (1..$Length | ForEach-Object { $chars[(Get-Random -Max $chars.Length)] })
}
New-Password -Length 24
