How to Use Windows Focus Sessions to Stay Productive

4 min read

Windows 11 Focus Sessions block distracting notifications and integrate with the Clock app timer. How to set up focus time, link with Spotify, and track daily progress.

Focus Sessions in Windows 11 silence notifications and let you set a dedicated work timer — built on the Pomodoro technique. It's built into the Clock app and requires no third-party software.

Open Focus Sessions

Win + S → search Clock → open Clock app → click Focus sessions in the left sidebar

Or: Win + ISystemFocus (opens related settings, not the timer itself)

Start a Focus Session

In Clock → Focus sessions:

  1. Set your session length (any duration, common choices: 25, 45, 60 minutes)
  2. Optionally add a task from Microsoft To Do
  3. Click Start focus session

During the session:

  • Notifications are silenced (Do Not Disturb activates)
  • A timer runs in the Clock app and in the taskbar
  • After 25 minutes, a 5-minute break is suggested

Customize Notifications During Focus

Win + ISystemFocus

Options:

  • Turn on Do not disturb automatically — blocks notifications during sessions
  • Show a badge on taskbar apps — still shows notification count without banners
  • Flash taskbar — for urgent notifications only
  • Show summary after focus session — shows what you missed when done

Link with Spotify

In Clock → Focus sessions → Spotify appears if installed.

Connect your Spotify account → choose a playlist → it plays automatically when focus starts and pauses during breaks.

Add Tasks from Microsoft To Do

If you use Microsoft To Do:

In Clock → Focus sessions → Tasks panel on the right → your To Do tasks appear. Select one as your focus task.

When the session ends, you can mark it complete.

Manual Do Not Disturb (Without Timer)

If you don't need a timer but want to silence notifications:

Win + A (Action Center) → click Focus or Do not disturb toggle

Or: Win + ISystemNotificationsDo not disturb → turn on

Focus Session Keyboard Shortcut

There's no direct shortcut to start Focus Sessions, but:

  • Open Clock: no default shortcut (pin Clock to taskbar for quick access)
  • Toggle Do Not Disturb: no single shortcut — use Action Center (Win + A)

Track Daily Progress

Clock → Focus sessions → Daily progress section shows:

  • Today's total focus time
  • Sessions completed
  • Streak of consecutive days

Focus Sessions vs Third-Party Pomodoro Apps

Windows Focus Sessions Forest / Pomofocus
Notification blocking ✅ System-level ❌ App only
Spotify integration
Task integration Microsoft To Do
Cross-platform ❌ Windows only
Customizable intervals Limited

Use Windows Focus Sessions if you're already in the Microsoft ecosystem (To Do, Spotify). Use dedicated apps if you need more Pomodoro customization or cross-platform sync.

Summary

Open Clock app → Focus sessions → set time → Start. Notifications are automatically silenced during sessions. Connect Spotify for background music and Microsoft To Do for task tracking. Check daily progress to build a focus habit.
